Rare 1949 Edition Available only from Paris Literary Journal In 1949, Maria Jolas and her Transition Press published an extraordinary book called the James Joyce Yearbook in a limited edition of 950 copies numbered from 51 to 1000. History buffs and Paris expat enthusiasts instantly acknowledge the role that "transition" contributed to 20th Century literature. Home to many of the century´s most influential writers and artists, "transition" was the first to publish James Joyce. In the late 40s, Maria Jolas decided to honor the author of Ulysses and Finnigan´s Wake with the publication of the James Joyce Yearbook, a collection of distinguished texts by critics of the day, many of whom knew Joyce well.
When the daughters of Maria and Eugene Jolas moved from the family apartment on the rue de Seine in Paris´s 6th arrondissement, several cartons of books were discovered in an obsure closet space. In the spirit of helping to nourish and prolong the important tradition of expat publishing in Paris the Jolas sisters have contributed these these rare books to Frank, Paris´s premier and longest running English-language literary journal today. The copies, perfectly conserved since their publication date in July of 1949, are covered in their original translucent cellophane wrappers and are in mint condition. The cover artwork and frontispiece were created as an homage to James Joyce by artist André Masson. All the content is previously unpublished and most it remains unpublished elsewhere to this day. Contributors include: Stuart Gilbert, Wladimir Weidle, louis Gillet, Roland von Weber, Hermann Broch, Paul Léon, Philippe Soupault, Clémence Ramnoux, an interview with Mr. John Stanislas Joyce. (One copy was recently sold on eBay as part of a benefit auction sponsored by Chivas Regal with the procedes going to the Rainforest Foundation. A second copy was auctioned at Sotheby´s.) As part of its effort to promote the work of writers and poets, Frank´s publisher, David Applefield, has decided to offer the copies to interested readers. The price is 0 US, and comes by international courrier accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and a 5-year subscription to Frank.
