Wyn Cooper
for Jack Peters
Five men strike poses in front of the general store. In the middle distance, the snow is as tall as the woman who walks toward them. The men wear coats of their own sheeps´ wool, befitting the season but not the day. They sweat beneath their hats. The woman thought it warmer than it was, and chose something springy, which according to the men was just right, her dress swaying in the March wind, the opposite direction of the trees. Three of them look as if they´d just been caught watching her walk. One looks straight ahead, his hands in his lap. The final man, closest to the camera, his face open to the moment´s movement, smiles broadly at the woman walking, it appears, his way.
