Simon Knight, Translator

from Things with no Past Translated from the Italian by Simon Knight

For my mother

I
Some houses are not just houses:
emergent wrecks, on reefs
where the wind blows implacable, strong,
and the cry of pain mingles
with the roar of the ocean.
The shark that grazes them,
careless, with its dorsal fin,
does not even notice. But they are there.

II
"In our village
the sun rises by Mount Olimpino
and goes down towards Seseglio. To the south
are Pedrinate and Penz Wood, rich in mushroom
and bramble. Our landmark
is the House of Thieves."

III
Come,
it is time to go.
Anyway,
here there is nothing more to be done.
